Basic certification requirements for a Certified Prevention Specialist are:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 2000 clock hours of ATOD prevention work experience
- 150 hours of training that have occurred within the past 10 years.
- Of these 150 hours the following are required:
+ 6 hours of prevention specific ethics
+ 2 hours of HIV/AIDS training
+ a maximum of 40 hours of on-line training and
+ a maximum of 40 hours in-house training
- 120 hours of supervision by a Certified Prevention Specialist
- Passing score on the IC&RC Prevention Specialist Exam
